Rock stars die young or grow old disgracefully. Only the special ones may or may not, in the usual way, have existed at all.

Such is the case with Dr Big Love of the eponymous band. Contributing “Spirit, Karma and Inspiration”, he guides them to make music that speaks to the soul.

The Naked Juggler is a defiant, bloody-minded labour of love from a bunch of vagabond musicians who have spent over five years shaping the album, determined to make music that is honest, true and fashionless, if not timeless. The result is an extraordinary collection of songs that defy categorisation and talk to the human heart about human things: friendship, regret, lust, a longing for freedom, and, at the end of day, a quiet acceptance of what is.

The Naked Juggler

Going deep into the swampy hinterland of rock to find the source of spirit, love and liberation that makes the best of popular music so electrifyingly special, The Naked Juggler takes a rich brew of great melodies, driving rhythm, soaring guitars, keyboards, brass and even the odd alligator to make something quite special. Music that is full of joy, energy and humour.

The self-penned songs range from the laid-back melancholic wistfulness of The Last Minute of Forever, through the passionate drive of Mes Cahiers Bleus, via the McCartneyesque One Big Love, right to the quirky, rueful Tears After Dark. Dr Big Love – is it “him” or “them”? – have resisted the temptation to cut corners, copy or be rushed. The first vocals for the achingly beautiful Come The Morning were recorded in 2007, the last at the start of 2011. During this time life happened, in the form of the usual run of triumphs and defeats, causing things to be placed on the back burner for months on end. Maybe this was no bad thing, letting the ideas, words and sounds mature? These songs are as they should be.

People will love The Naked Juggler because of its energy and authenticity. Not just that, though, as we are reminded in the title track...
“We’re all trapped in the footlights / Not for us the trooper / Not for us the spot”
... we are all capable of doing something rather wonderful.

Dr Big Love

This itinerant bunch of musical vagabonds are: the Doctor himself, Chris Lydon on keyboards, Ben Adcock on drums, Tim Gadsby on bass and Steve Bonham on guitars and vocals.

Tim and Steve have been playing on the fringes of the music scene for over twenty years from busking around the Mediterranean, to smaller festivals and recording. Never far from a guitar, either of them.

Steve has also continued to write and compose, including the first mystery play for over 500 years! Ben is simply a great rock drummer, with one of the sharpest memories around. Music is built in to these guys.

Chris ‘the Bishop’ Lydon is an eclectic musician working all over with young musicians, helping those residing at Her Majesty’s pleasure rehabilitate through learning music and connecting people with Shakespeare in unusual ways and in unusual places.

The Naked Juggler also features the wonderful voice of Sam Carter throughout.
