"It was a long hot summer, years ago. I was living in Leeds in a room at the top of an old stone staircase. I was supposed to be studying – philosophy. I lived a small narrow room with a thin cramped bed on which always lay my guitar. Desperate not to do Descartes, I picked up the guitar and, in a long afternoon with my feet on my desk, wrote three songs, one of which was Mes Cahiers Bleus.
"I didn’t think that much of it, it was just a D to G shuffle kind of thing, the lyrics were based on a review of book of the same name that happened to be sitting in my waste paper basket. In fact, if I remember rightly, something else I wrote about pixies seemed more substantial.
"A couple of years later, after doing the vagabond journey kind of thing, I was playing in a folk group with my old friend Tim and a wonderful singer called Nicci Berry. We were looking around for some more material and I remembered this. It wasn’t really a folk song, though. Tim put a memorable bass line to it that made it even less so. We weren’t sure if it would work, but tried it out at a few gigs and it went down really well. So we recorded it on our album ‘Behind Bars’. The DJ and TV presenter Terry Christian picked up on it and started to play it, he also sent it to John Peel.
"It seemed to get quite a lot of airplay and at the little festivals and gigs we scratched around playing at, as soon as people heard that introductory bass riff, they would clap or cheer or bellow.
"Years went by, Tim and I started playing in Dr Big Love with the Bishop. No longer a folk act, we resurrected it for a gig in the park. Gave it the old swampy once over. The Bish wrote a brass part and introduced a staccato ‘Sparks’ type piano. We played it at the end of a long set on a warm summer's evening. Ben drove it on, everyone went mad. Jumping, dancing, singing along. Mayhem.
"So we knew we had to make it all over again. And here it is."
Mes Cahiers Bleus is released later this week. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.
You can see what the Doctor himself thinks of Arnie Oscillators latest communication with him over on the Waiting Room page.
Clearly Mr Oscillator has issues (well, I think we all spotted that from his first letter sent, bizarrely, addressed to Horatio) but Arnie is implying there are hidden messages in our music if you play it backwards. Not just hidden messages, in fact, but an entire bloomin' Marxist manifesto!
I don't know what happened to Arnie's record player when he was spinning the disc backwards but it was Spirit, Love and Liberation, that's for sure!
Have a listen yourself and see what you think. No hidden messages. No secrets. We've put our hearts on our sleeves with that one, and will continue to do so.
Get a little swampy x
